Sarah Breedlove was Madam CJ Walker’s birth name.

She was born in Louisiana in 1867.

Unlike her parents and siblings, Sarah was born free because Lincoln had enacted the Emancipation Proclamation.

At 7, she lived with her sister because her parents had died.

At 14, she married and she had a daughter.

Later, she moved in with her brothers because her husband had died.

She worked as a washerwoman because she needed money.

Before, she had worked as a house servant.
