She says “I was promoted to the washtub” because she first worked as a washerwoman.

She says “I was promoted to the cook kitchen” because she next worked as a house servant.

“And from there (…) preparations”: she says that because she started her business selling beauty products.

« I was promoted” = passive voice

She uses the passive voice because she had to work as a washerwoman and then as a house servant.

“I promoted myself » = active voice

She uses the active voice because creating her business was her own choice. She took control of her life.
