She says “I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South” because she was born in Louisiana which is a southern state.
She says “cotton fields” because her siblings and her parents were former slaves who worked in cotton fields.
She says “I was promoted to the washtub” because she first worked as a washerwoman.
She says “I was promoted to the cook kitchen” because she then worked in a kitchen.
She says « I promoted myself…preparations » because she started a business selling hair and beauty products.
When she says “I was promoted” she uses the passive voice because she didn’t have a choice: she had to work as a washerwoman and as a house servant.
When she says “I promoted myself” she uses the active voice because she took control of her life starting her business.
Have a choice : avoir le choix
Take control : prendre le contrôle
Life: la vie
